James Kalm reporting on Philip Guston: A Centennial Exhibition at MCKEE GALLERY

This exhibition celebrates the 100 anniversary of Guston's birth. Philip Guston (1913 --1980) was one of the most recognized painters of the second half of the twentieth century. Gaining early recognition for his narrative paintings, he had firsthand contact with some of Abstract Expressionism's founders and joined that movement's second wave, becoming the prototypical Abstract Impressionist.

Always a pleasure to hear Philip Guston talking about art.

‘When you start working, everybody is in your studio—the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas—all are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then, if you’re lucky, even you leave.’ - Philip Guston

Late in life, the artist looks back over a career that originated in social realism during the '30s, moved to the center of Abstract Expressionism, and culminated in a return to figuration. Filmed at his retrospective in San Francisco in 1980 and at his Woodstock studio, where Guston is seen painting, the artist speaks candidly about his philosophy of painting and the psychological motivation for his work.
